Located in North Guwahati, Manikarneswar Temple is situated at the top of Manikhalaya hill in Assam and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Local legends associate this sacred place of Manikarneswar with lord Shiva taking rest after the self-immolation of Sati and subsequent dismembering of Sati's body by lord Vishnu through his Sudarshana chakra. It is believed that some portions of the neck and shoulder of Sati have fallen in the nearby sacred place of Dirgheswari. Lord Shiva rested under a Bel tree at the confluence of Barnadi and Brahmaputra rivers known as Manisila.
