A short distance from the city lies the ruins of the once powerful Kachari Kingdom. Khaspur, their capital built in 1960, was once a thriving centre of power. According to legend, the Kacharis were descendants of Ghatotkacha, the son of Bhima from the Mahabharata. Though the place has vanished with time, the Sun Gate, Lion Gate and the old King’s Temple although weather-beaten, have withstood the ravages of time. Their weathered walls, marked with intricate carvings, continue to reflect the kingdom’s rich heritage.
