Located approximately 45 kms from Tezpur, Nameri National Park is a bird watcher’s and ornithologist’s paradise, with over 300 species of birds. It is also home to the White-winged wood duck, the state bird of Assam. This 212 sq. km park has a combination of semi-evergreen and moists deciduous forests and is home to one of the largest and most endangered herds of Asian Elephants. The park also adjoins the 800 sq.km. Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh and serves as an important elephant corridor. Nameri also has over 600 varieties of trees and plants with medicinal properties. It is also declared as Tiger Reserve due of its popularity with striped cats in the Himalayan foothills.
Two days should suffice to cover the park unless travellers are there for research work.
Nameri National Park offers treks in the jungle with a chance to sight rare bird species such as the Assam state bird, the white-winged wood duck. Travellers can also go for rafting on the River Jia Bharali where they will have a good possibility to sight tigers and elephants. The rafting trip is really a very enjoyable experience with few gentle rapids and the splendid view of this majestic river flowing from the Himalayas all the way through Arunachal Pradesh’s Kameng districts. Assam Tourism Development Corporation has a nice sprawling resort with log-hut cottages. There are also many private properties: Eco-Camp Potashali, Camp Lalimou, Jungle Camp, N Palky Camp and few tented accommodation.
Tezpur, 45 kilometres from Nameri National Park, is the nearest airport and railhead. Tezpur is easily accessible by bus, train, and also have a weekly flight from Kolkata.
Nameri enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate with mild and partly dry winter and a warm humid summer.
