Lush green vegetation, hills and natural water bodies like ponds and streams form the ambience of the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, the biggest in entire Northeast. Located at the centre of Guwahati City, it is spread over an area of 1.75 sq.km and is home to several exotic species of animals and plants. There are 781 animals and 389 birds in the zoo. Owning to its rich fauna, the Assam State Zoo is popularly known as “Green Lung” of Guwahati city. The zoo is surrounded by serene landscape gardens; unique abundance of wildlife has a vital role in shaping the ecological outline of the state. Visitors can try a golf cart ride around the zoo, or they can walk around the zoo admiring its lush greenery and the enclosures in the zoo have small boards that give basic information about and traits of the animal and species within. Assam State Zoo is home to a diverse range of animals and plants. The zoo is open for visitors to meander through and get up close views of the wildlife.
