Darang

The district headquarters of Darrang, Mangaldoi is located 70 km from Guwahati. It was once, one of Assam’s largest districts, but after several districts were carved out of it, the total land area shrank significantly. Darrang was formerly a part of the Hindu Kingdom of Kamrup. A part of Orang National Park also falls in Darrang District. Apart from that the prime places of tourist attraction are Khatara Satra, Batha Beel and Dhalpur Shiva Mandir.

Things to do

If you are in Darrang, you must visit Khatara Satra to learn about Assamese Vaishnavite culture. It was founded in the year 1568. Then there’s Dhalpur Shiva Mandir, a 5000-year-old temple perched on Dhalpur Hill, 25 kilometres from Mangaldoi town. Darrang has a few water bodies that are flocked by migratory birds. The prominent among them is the Batha Beel. Most of these Water bodies were created during the rule of the Bhuyan Dynasty and British Period.

How to reach

Mangaldoi Town is well connected by bus service from Guwahati as N.H 52 passes through it. The Nearest airport is Guwahati which is about 60 km from Mangaldoi Town. Though there are few nearby railway station, it is better to proceed to Guwahati Railway Station at Panbazar if you are planning to travel by train for your onwards journey.
