Tezpur

Situated on the North bank of river Brahmaputra, Tezpur is endowed with magnificent scenic beauty and outstanding archaeological ruins, surrounded by the flourishing green hills of Arunachal Pradesh. It is the headquarter of Sonitpur district, Tezpur features in Assamese folklore as the capital of King Banasura, whose beautiful daughter Usha fell in love with Lord Krishna’s grandson Aniruddha. Usha’s friend Chitralekha transported Aniruddha to Agnigarh-Fort of fire- where Usha was confined by Banasura. Lord Krishna attacked Tezpur to free Aniruddha, but Banasura a big devotee of Lord Shiva sought his help. The clash between the two gods covered the city in pools of blood, hence the name Tezpur (city of blood). Tezpur is known as the city of eternal romance because of the love story of Usha and Aniruddha.
