Panidehing Birds' sanctuary
Panidihing Bird Sanctuary was constituted in the year 1999 by carving out a small portion of Panidihing Reserve Forest and a major portion of Non-Cadastral land existed adjacent to the said reserve forest with the areas of 33.93 Sq Kms. The protected area lies between the mighty river Brahmaputra and the river Desang at a distance of 21 KM from Sivasagar. The eco-system of the Bird Sanctuary is flood plain one comprising mainly grassland and some water bodies locally called “Beels” and some seasonal streams crisscrossing the entire topography. The Demow River (Julatoop Nalla) that flows right through the Sanctuary is perennial with high water current. The area is a representative of wet alluvial grassland of Brahmaputra valley. The sanctuary is an ‘Important Bird Area’ as per Bombay Natural History Society notification and the Ornithologists have identified more than 267 bird species (Migratory 70 species) in the sanctuary and many are yet to be identified. Being an important wetland in between the two rivers this area attracts thousands of migratory birds and it is also a breeding ground of waterfowls (like the endangered Large Whistling Teal, Swamp Partridge) and fishes.
The protected area is the heaven for bird watchers and harbours many species of migratory birds, seven species of storks. There are 34 numbers of IUCN Red Data Book Bird Species (2010) in the sanctuary and more than 61 species of fishes have been recorded.
