Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary
Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Karbi Anglong district of Assam. This sanctuary is well known for its hot-water springs. It has a total area of 6 sq. km. It was given the status of a sanctuary in 1952. The sanctuary is situated within the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council area and houses rare and endangered flora and fauna. It is one of the oldest sanctuaries containing hot water spring and waterfalls and are surrounded by Nambor Sanctuary. The sanctuary houses 51 rare species of Orchid. The sanctuary is visited by many tourists from far off places. Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is full of rare and endangered flora and fauna. The climate of this sanctuary is moist tropical. Etymology of Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary: Garampani in Assamese language means ?hot water? and the Wildlife Sanctuary by this name is famous for its hot springs and waterfalls. People come to bath in this hot spring for healthy skin.
Flora and Fauna of Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary: Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary provides shelter to several species of wild animals and birds. Important mammals that are found in this sanctuary are tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, leopard cat, jungle cat, barking deer, sambar, Asian elephant, gaur, hoolock gibbon, capped langur, slow loris, pig tailed macaque, rhesus macaque, Chinese pangolin, civet, Indian fox, mongoose, etc. Apart from mammals, several species of reptiles and amphibians are found in this sanctuary. Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in its bird diversity too. Some of the birds species found here are red jungle fowl, Kaleej pheasant, different species of hornbill, green pigeon, green imperial pigeon, racket-tailed drongo, myna, jungle myna, hill myna, black-hooded oriole, different species of Parakeet, dove, drongo, bulbul, minivet, eagle, kingfisher, woodpecker, barbet, Owl, brown fish owl, etc. The sanctuary also has many mammals like Python, Cobra, Monitor lizards, etc. The sanctuary is rich in vegetation. The vegetation of the sanctuary is predominantly tropical semi-evergreen. Trees like Holokh, Hollong, Bhelu, Nahar, Poma, Uriiyam, Hilikha, etc. are some of the species seen in the sanctuary.
