Tipong Colliery is located in Makum coal field and it was established by Assam railways and Trading company in the year 1924. After the enactment of Coal Mines Nationalisation Act 1973, the operation were handed over to North Eastern Coal field, a unit of Coal India Limited. Tipong Colliery is located at an altitude of approx. 174 above MSL. Tipong Colliery has one of the World's oldest operational steam locomotives DAVID which was manufactured in 1851 by WG Bagnal Ltd. of Stafford, England. Though this magnificent British Marvel was manufactured 150 years ago, it is still operational with periodic maintainence. Apart from DAVID, 2 more non -operational steam locomotives are stationed at Tipong. The 2 feet gauge railway track which is approx. 2.9 KM in length passing through a tunnel and two bridges connecting Tipong Colliery residential area to mine entry is another spectacle for visitors. Often train entusiasts, visitors from across the world and India as well visit Tipong to get a glimpse of these engineering marvels.
