The first zoo was established under the auspices of? Ahom king Rudra Singha alias Sukhrungpha (1696-1714). Situated around one mile west of Joysagar Tank in the Jerenga Pathar, this is Asia's first natural zoo encompassing an area of 350 Bughas. Just like an octagonal Shape of Ahom coins, it also has eight earthen fortresses each separated by a deep moat. Both at the entrance and exit point there are grand?sal wooden door panels. In every fortress, animals were kept separately while in the moats, aquatic animals including crocodiles were conserved.
A visitors road was constructed in the periphery and towards the entrance gate two ponds were dugged out. These water bodies are now home to lakhs of migratory birds and different species of fishes.Though it was Poshugarh means fortress animal home, but later it became popular as Pohugarh which literally means Deer park or fortress of Deer. It must be noted that several officers were appointed during the Ahom reign for maintenance and welfare of these animals viz Hatibarua, Ghurabarua, Kukurasuwa Barua, Sensuwa barua etc.
