Nalbari Treaditional Japi Industry
Six villages of Nalbari District namely Sutarkuchi, Tilana, Taresia, Mugakuchi, Kordoitola and Balilesha are famous for the making of traditional and colourful conical hats (Japi) of Assam. A symbol of the land, these Japis are usually used for felicitation and welcoming the guest according to a traditional custom of Assam. These conical hats are made of tightly woven bamboo and Tokou Paat (a kind of leaf like fan palm). Colourful decoration adds to the beauty and has become a popular symbol of Assam used for home decors. The Pub-Nalbari Sanmilita Japi Silpa Unnayyan Cooperative Society has been established for the welfare of artisans involved in this industry.
