Kareng Ghar

In 1540, the Ahom king Suklengmung (1539-1552) shifted the capital of the state to Gargaon and it emerged as the principal capital of the Ahom Kingdom. The Gargaon palace is situated at a distance of 14 KM eastward from Sivasagar and visitors can easily visit the destination by road. While the original structure had been made of wood and impermanent materials, the existing structure of the palace, made of brick, was built by King Rajeswar Singha (1751-1769) in 1752. In 1747, King Pramatta Singha constructed a brick wall about five kilometers in length surrounding this palace with a masonry driveway entrance. The historic building underwent a decrepit condition during the time of the East India Company. Some portions of the palace like the main gate and the walls were destroyed by the Assam Tea Company and the building materials were used by them.
