Joysagar Tank & Temples
Considered as one of the largest man-made ponds in India, the Joysagar Tank is an example of human excellence. Encompassing an area of about 318 acres, this tank was dug by King Rudra Singha in 1698 in memory of his mother Joymati. He also constructed three temples on the bank of this tank to provide the visitors a serene and majestic landscape. These temples are Keshavarai Vishnudol alias the Joydol, which is the tallest Vishnu temple of Ahom era; the other two temples are Shivadol and Devidol.
Two small hut-like constructions known as Surya and Ganesh temple lie adjacent to the Joydol. The king adapted the Nilachala type of architectural design which was also used in the reconstruction of Kamakhya Temple by Koch king Naranarayana. The Joydol is characterized by great aesthetic splendor with the decorations of unusual fineness. The Vaidyanath temple on the bank, bears evidence of Islamic influence on the king's building effort. Though Rudra Singha patronized Vaishnavism, in honour of the devotees of Goddess Durga he also performed the rites of Durga Puja once in a year in the Devidol.
