Ajan Pir Dargah
Azan Fakir, born Shah Miran, also known as Ajan Pir, Hazrat Shah Miran, and Shah Milan (presumably from Miran), was a Sufi Syed, poet and preacher from the 17th century who came from Baghdad to settle in Sivasagar, Assam. He helped to unify the people of the Brahmaputra valley with a message of peace through reformation and affirmed the faith of Islam in the region. The nickname Azan came from his performing the azan. He came to Assam in 1630 from Iraq, that is, approximately 200 years after the birth of Srimanta Sankardeva.
As a Pir he composed Zikirs which are spiritual compositions with a message of Sufism. However, he was convicted as a Mughal spy under a conspiracy and was brutally punished by the King. Later, in a realisation and atonement on knowing the factual truth, the king granted land to Ajan Fakir at Soraguri Chapori, which is around 22 KM from Sivasagar. This place on the bank of Brahmaputra has become a holy place with Ajan Pir's Dargah with the urus being held annually.
