Chirang district, covering an area of 1468.42 sq km is a relatively new district of Assam. It was carved out of the districts of Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Barpeta in 2004. It is one of the four districts of Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD). The word "Chirang" is derived from the Garo word "Chi" meaning water and "Rang" meaning wealth. It is the second least populous district in the state, after Dima Hasao. Kajalgaon is the district headquarters.
The nearest Airport is the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Aerodrome at Guwahati. It is well connected by the Indian Railway network. The nearest junctions are Bongaigaon and New Bongaigaon.
